Most people find that parenthood is difficult, but becoming a single parent can be outright overwhelming. Having a spouse to lean on, discuss issues with and help with all the chores is a luxury you do not usually appreciate enough until it is gone. Raising a child alone forces single parents to face additional challenges can make you feel depressed, scared and unable to deal with parenting.

Every situation is unique, but it is always overwhelming. The extent depends on many variables including personalities and available resources. But the individual determines what the future holds by the way they overcome obstacles. Following are some tips to help you deal with all the challenges that a single parent faces.

Becoming a Single Parent

It is not usually the parent's choice to raise their children on their own. Several reasons why people become single parents are:

  • Absence due to Military Service: If a spouse is never around because of a military job, there should already be a system established whereby parents can support one another since everyone is in the same boat.

  • Death of a Spouse: A widower grieving over a loss has twice the emotional baggage having to deal with the death as well as becoming a single parent.

  • Divorce or Separation: Divorce or separation is very difficult because sometimes the child can assume responsibility.

  • Never Getting Married: This can be a better option if the parents are very young or find that they would not be compatible.

Identifying and Facing these Unique Challenges

Many unique challenges exist for the single parent. One major issue is finances. Most families exist on two incomes. Attempting to make ends meet on one income can be quite a struggle. Problems that arise after a divorce, however, can be even more stressful for both parent and child. These can include both financial and emotional conflicts. These include:

  • collecting child support
  • joint custody
  • power struggles
  • visitation.

Single parents must accept their situation and face these challenges head on to prevent serious problems from developing. The parent must sacrifice wants for needs. Depending on the help from extended family and friends for support can make quite a difference. Developing an amicable relationship with the other parent is a necessity to ensure a less stressful life for all.

Finding Parenting Resources

Single parents can find parenting help in many different places. Resources include:

  • babysitters
  • churches
  • community centers
  • day care
  • friends
  • Meetup groups
  • relatives
  • park districts
  • social service agencies.

Access to a computer can make it much easier to find these resources, especially in an unfamiliar place. But just a quick drive through an area will offer many options. Family and friends, however, should offer the most important and reliable support.

Dating as a Single Parent

A single parent's most important job is caring for the child. Having a personal life is equally as important so one can have a happy, healthy and fulfilling existence. One aspect of this is meeting new people and dating. This may seem selfish, but in the long run it is not. Getting out and meeting others, making friendships and talking about your relationships with your children are the first steps. Being honest with everyone concerned is the best policy.

Life Goes On

Even though it may seem like the end of the world when a tragedy strikes or a marriage ends, you must realize that your child still needs a good environment to live and thrive in. The main thing to remember is that it is the quality of parenting, not the number of parents that is most important. And while you are at it, get a healthy new life for yourself.
